Light chain (AL) amyloidosis is classified as rare disease in European and international level according to the U.S. Office of Rare Diseases (ORD), a segment of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). However, the last decade we have witnessed a dramatic increase of AL amyloidosis cases that are diagnosed per year mainly because this disease is underdiagnosed. As funding research opportunities become available, our understanding of the AL with cardiac involvement (AL-CA) will lead us in new directions. AL-CA is a clonal plasma cell disorder in which cardiac involvement is the primary determinant of prognosis. Therefore, the optimal care of the patients involves augmented dissemination in clinicians and close coordination between hematologists and cardiologists.
